Our programmes help schools meet Ofsted expectations

We have designed our professional development programmes from the bottom-up: starting from research on effective learning (such as 'The Nature of Learning', an excellent summary of education research) and then connecting this with our experience in schools. We have realised that this approach also supports teachers in meeting the revised expectations of Ofsted. Below, we have summarised Ofsted's latest descriptions of outstanding teaching, as well as commentary on how our CPD programmes are aligned with these expectations.

Sustained progress, outstanding achievement

  • Ofsted: Much teaching is outstanding, never less than consistently good; as a result, almost all pupils are making sustained progress that leads to outstanding achievement
  • Our programme: Based on the principles of effective learning; teachers regularly reflect on how their actions impact pupils’ learning (e.g. through analysis of student work in every session)

Consistently high expectations

  • Ofsted: All teachers have consistently high expectations of pupils; they plan and teach lessons that enable pupils to learn exceptionally well
  • Our programme: Teachers will learn how to communicate high expectations, including by selecting problems and texts that are appropriately challenging for pupils

Check for understanding

  • Ofsted: Teachers systematically and effectively check pupils’ understanding in lessons, and intervene with notable impact on the quality of learning
  • Our programme: As we cover the features of critical thinking and problem solving, teachers learn how to check for understanding and adjust their teaching if needed

Reading, writing, communications, mathematics

  • Ofsted: The teaching of reading, writing, communication and mathematics is highly effectively planned and implemented across curriculum
  • Our programme: Explicitly designed to improve the quality of reading, writing and mathematics instruction

Subject knowledge, learner engagement

  • Ofsted: Teachers and other adults authoritatively impart knowledge to ensure that pupils are engaged in learning and generate a high level of commitment to learning
  • Our programme: Our approach to critical thinking and problem solving relies on developing strong subject knowledge, and selecting appropriate learning tasks to ensure learner engagement

Marking and constructive feedback

  • Ofsted: Consistently high quality marking and constructive feedback from teachers ensures pupils make significant and sustained gains in learning
  • Our programme: Teachers will learn how to provide constructive feedback that helps move learning forward, as pupils are solving problems, reading or writing texts

Match individual needs

  • Ofsted: Teachers use well-judged teaching strategies, including setting appropriate homework, together with support and intervention, to match individual needs accurately
  • Our programme: Teachers will learn how to differentiate by selecting problems and texts that are appropriately challenging for pupils
